Safety or Income Generator?

I was taking the train the other day, and saw this huge income generating idea. If you, like the average Singaporean, take the train daily, you would have noticed the safety barriers lining the platforms. You would also have noticed the ads plastered on it unflatteringly.


Imagine if a supermarket advertises its products on those doors, all you would need to do is to take snapshot of the products you want to purchase. Likewise, you can scan in its respective qr code or product code. The stuff could either be arranged for pickup at a certain outlet or delivered to your house.


I have come across some ads with huge qr codes at train stations. Which I believe would be highly ineffective. Who would want to stand in the middle of the station and take a min to scan in the qr code? We are all too busy dashing up the escalator to queue up to board the train. Well, majority of us are. The rest just stand in front of the door.


If I were a supermarket or grocery chain, heck even blogshops can consider this, I would advertise using qr codes or barcodes on the safety sliding barriers. Then, because smrt says we should move to the carriages at the ends so more people can go in, I would place qr codes for either more products or my whole catalogue at those ends. So, sure you can either stay in the middle and purchase one product, or walk towards the ends and view and purchase more products.


Another marketing tactic I would use would be those leaflets looped around the handles in trains. Imagine you're cramped in the train and there's this annoying leaflet ruffling your hair, you are about to push it to one side when you realize 'hey, that's a good deal'. Nah, I'm kidding. Singaporeans don't speak like that. We go 'eh cheap siol' and take down the leaflet to read. The leaflet not only show a discount or promo etc, it allows you to download the whole catalogue too.


And after browsing through, you realize you missed your stop.


Couple these two methods together, and I bet business will improve. Definitely more user friendly than those huge qr codes plastered on station walls or train windows.
