of opera

Sleeves that fly and sway against
The air, and brushes,
And shuffling of feet.

Of emperors amidst crashing cymbals,
Of princesses and partaking of wine,
And beauty and moon and long notes,
Is opera.

Tugging of strings repeatedly melody
And tunes.
Oh no!
The emperor is nowhere to be found!

A scandal emerges. A concubine!
Alas, the music heightens.

To get sent away, and get married
Without choice but the safety
Peace and harmony of two nations
Two warring states.

How great thou sacrifice. To live in a strange land, for the sake of your homeland.

Rides Home

Night journeys home,
Each of us sits,
Lost in our thoughts,
In contemplation.

Beats that rumble,
Words don't mean a thing,
Driver yawns and moves on,
In constant tandem.

The soothing lights,
The push of cold air,
As the bus slowly lumbers
Along on its route,
In repetition.

Relaxing. Peace.
Calmness.
Blessed with what I have.
With whom I have.

If I were to die today,
Would it be of joy or grief
Or sadness or regrets?

I would pass on happily.

This is something that I haven't done for a long time. I used to ask myself at the end of each day, on my journey home. If the bus were to erupt in flames, and I flame on, would I die happily? Would i smile and accept the end of the journey, or fight because I have apologies not made, or work not done, relationships not treasured, persons that mattered.....

I would pass on happily, content in bliss.

Water

Water inching struggling squirming
From middle to the side
Encouraged by the wind
Motivated by fast speeds.

Hurtling onto windshields but not
Hurting,
Shakingly on its journey.

Look sir

Look sir, with your fancy names,
Don't you know that your nice persuasion
Blatant coercion does not work on me.

Your blunt distaste for workers in
The service sector and venting
Your verbal narrow mindedness
Does not yield you much good
And respect.

Why do people look down upon others?
Why do we throw scathing comments
Onto others?
To assert authority?
Or to garner respect?

Wealth, position and power are the three
Greatest destructors.
You, sir, have none.

Don't take solace that verbal conversations
Offer anonymity and increase your power.
Be wary of what lies on the other side of the cord
The power it beholds,
At turning your life upside down,
Who do you call when your phone is down?

Consider this fair warning, sir,
As you journey across life's path.
Make peace, not war.
Why resort to violence and empty threats?

Local Games

While on a very long bus ride, my mind wandered and concluded maybe we need local games. Now, these games would most definitely appear to be rip-offs of internationally acclaimed games, yet when infused with local culture (and images), they might just be successful. Here are some of my ideas:

1) Taxi taxi.

Have you ever dreamt of being your own boss? Be a taxi driver today! Choose from a variety of models, and drive your fare-paying passengers around the streets of Singapore.

You can play the game in two versions - campaign, or chiong ah! In the first version, you start as a cab driver with the simplest car model available. You can choose if you want a full shift or a day or night half shift, and then you're off to pick up passengers, and abide by the law. This means no driving on the sidewalks, or beating red lights, or speeding. Over time, as your level and income increases, you get to unlock newer and better car models, and upgrade your vehicle. You also get to unlock new functions such as advance bookings.

In chiong ah! You have to earn as much income as you can within certain time limits, ranging from thirty seconds, to a day. You don't have to play by the rules in this version, though you should note that damages to your taxi will affect its speed.

2) Cooking zi cha

Why eat when you can cook it too? A localized time-management game, you own a zi cha store. You serve customers to their seats, then cook the dishes, like mui fan or chilli crab or hotplate tofu, and then serve to your customers, collect the bill and you're done.

When starting up, you have to do everything yourself. However, when you level up and have more cash, you can splurge on equipment upgrades, hiring more chefs or servers, and even outsource your clearing of rubbish! You can also choose to purchase tv sets or getai performances to entertain customers while they wait for food.

Melaka Day 2

I had my cherry prodded, twisted, kneaded and tickled today, if cherry were to be defined for first time experiences.

I think only thick skinned people can go for a fish spa. How else do you stand the many tiny (or well-fed) fishes nibbling at all areas of your feet? My sis and I could not stop giggling like school kids when we plunged our feet in.

We managed to keep the whole feet in for three seconds, before slowly letting them suck on our heels. After all, the heels would be the least unfeeling part of the feet. Truly invigorating first experience though.

Personally I would prefer having my first time in a crowded fish spa. Imagine having your feet tickled, and when you look left and right, the other fish are eyeing your thigh. Add the disconcerting image of opening and closing of mouths as they breathe.

After which, I gamely went for a back massage. Owww. No pain, no gain right? Besides, what's there to lose (except RM20) anyway?

I think it was more of a crash course in gymnastics than massage, as the female masseur proceeded to contort my body into weird positions.

And yes, she did crack my neck twice, once on the left and once on the right. It was scary.

The day after, I went for another massage. This time, it was on one of the numerous massage chairs spread out in the shopping centre for RM1 for 3mins. The machine-ated massage was actually more pleasurable than the human massage though.

And, now to travel home. :)

Malacca Day 1

As I write this, I am on the second level of a coach on my way to Malacca for a family getaway. The last civilian overseas trip I made was two to three years ago.

Back then, there were only one deck buses. Back then, you could grab chicken rice for 1.20.

I confess I am in a state of anxious excitement. My eyes greedily devour the sights in front of me. Luscious greens stretching till as far as my eye can see. Mountains outlines looming in the distance. Attap houses line the dirt tracks that run alongside the highway. Huge billboards erected scream with color and grasp for attention.

Yet, my mind is confused and uneasy. Oh towering blocks of flats with bamboo poles if clothes sticking out, where art thou forth? Where art thou, trees placed in one straight line beside roads?

How is it possible that there is 'nothing but blue skies for miles'? A short journey and I enter a different world.

These dirt paths bring back nostlagic memories of trekking in Thailand during my army days. Red dirt which is scarce in Singapore.

And as this journey progresses, my mind settles but briefly, ready to be reinvigorated by sights, smells and sounds.

what are we?

What are we?

Below the color, below the shade,
Underneath the crimson fade,
Of the setting sun.

Beneath the value of our skin,
Tall short fat or lean,
Of the different physiques.

Different tongues and races,
Boasting of different faces,
Of our nation.

The chinese swears in hokkien.
The malay swears in hokkien,
The indians swears in hokkien.
And we all shove our way into the train.

What say you say me say I?
Please stand behind the yellow line.
Lah, don't pai seh.
Is not i dont give up my seat,
But cause i is dont know you fat or preg.

Chill luh, relak,
Dont angry la bro
Abang adeh everywhere we go
Le si member bo?

Dreams at what a cost

Dreams.

They come and go.
Sometimes they instil a purpose in you.
A vision and a goal for a better
Tomorrow.

So you work hard towards it,
But while you're slogging at your labour,
Other dreams come alongside,
And so you prioritize.

But, when you have finally reached that
Original dream,
And after being waylaid by other
Dreams you realize you are trapped
In the circle of dreams.

Where realizing your dreams increases your
Debts
And clearing the debts require sacrifice
Of blood and sweat
And then another dream comes along,
And plunges you into financial misery.
But oh what emotional bliss
And personal satisfaction.

At what a cost.

Lumos

Stare at any lightbulb.
Close your eyes.
What do you see?

You still see the light in the darkness.

Some people in life are like that.
No matter how dark you are,
Or no matter how hard you try to shut them out,
They will always be there,
In the corner of your mind,
Bright and ever shining like the sun.

Memorable, unforgettable, unreplaceable,
Lumos!
