Band Camp '06

After a mentally and emotionally-challenging 57 hours, St Hilda's Wind Orchestra's (SHWO) Band Camp 2006 ended, making a record - the highest number of casualities ever suffered - in Band Camp history.

Grazed kneecap, a terrible nose-bleed and mild food poisoning were some of the injuries SHWO members had to undergo during the 3 day, 2 night camp.

The camp had started with a bang as spirits and morale soared sky high. However, the soaring heat seared its influence, and the atmosphere soon sank into that of boredom and fatigue.

However, after lunch, things started to brighten up. The arrival and support of graduates helped to set the mood on its rightful place. The graduates, together with the band camp committee members, aided the success of the band cheer. Members had a hilarious time as the cheer's intonation, rhythm and melody were fine-tuned.

The ambience soon turned serious with the arrival of Mr Andy Sim, the resident conductor. The air soon turned sour as noise was produced instead of music. Smiles turned into frowns and eyes that were once sleepy now became fearful and alert.

After 172,800 seconds or so, the band left for ice-breaker games. On that day, eggs rained down from the sky.

Unfortunately, on that day, Mr Nelson Tan, 16, fell and grazed his arm and knee. Things then took an interesting twist when Ms Lindis Puey appeared on the scene. Already bai-kar-ed (White Legged), her love and admiration for her brother and her fellow musician overcame her physical disability and thus, she was able to provide tender loving care and concern to the victim.

The first night came and went without further incident except a hungry of committee members devouring pizza. Interestingly, the second day yielded a handful of surprises.

While it started off relatively boring and normal, as compared to the first day, surprise after surprise after surprise were born when the clock struck Twelve.

To summarise the second day, there were, amongst other things, a nose-bleed, an enraged and concerned graduate, raised tension, flour, more flour, scoldings and more flour.

The second day was definitely more surprising than the first day, especially in terms of musicality. And others. Band Room door was out-of-oder thanks to the numerous slammings and whackings and pushings and pullings and hittings.

The third day flew by like a breeze. The main band played 'I Am The Best' while Alumni had their practice in Band Room. Most of the band members suffered tremendous pain - stomachaches and diarrhoea - caused by Second Day's dinner. Heard clean-up was hard for those on the second level cause some guy left his shit around. Bet cha that was the previous night's dinner.
